What is a Pelvic Ultrasound Scan?

A pelvic scan is a non-invasive procedure that uses sound waves to produce images to assess the organs and structures inside a woman’s pelvis (lower abdomen). Organs and structures that are solid and uniform (such as the uterus or the ovaries) or that are fluid-filled (such as the bladder) show up clearly on a pelvic ultrasound. Bones may block other organs from being seen. Air-filled organs, such as the intestines, can make the image less clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

    • Pelvic ultrasound is not painful. But there would be discomfort with a full bladder during the transabdominal scan. The transvaginal scan can cause mild pain or discomfort when your doctor inserts the transducer inside the vagina.

  • There is no harm in performing this scan on your menstruation cycle. But for better results, it is recommended to get the scan done during the end of the cycle when the lining of the uterus is at its thinnest.
